On a remote coral island in the Indian Ocean two couples have met up for a diving holiday. Giovanni and his ex-lover Jacqueline, known as Jack, dive while Giovanni's wife waits on the beach. The deeper the two divers go, the more the past begins to shape the present and direct them all towards one final and decisive event.

Aiatrix Annie d'Orcy, accompanied by her parrot, lands her plane at a Mayan site in the jungles of Chiapas. She is looking for her daughter Perdie who has gone there as a journalist. Trying to track Perdie down, Annie and her parrot encounter drug-runners, Buddhists in retreat, and eccentric archeologists dabbling in shamanics, all of whom contribute to this light-hearted adventure.
